When you try to download a file from the popular file hosting site Rapidshare lately, you may have noticed that the speed of transfer has dropped significantly in comparison to previous downloads you made. This change apparently affects free users, that is users who are not logged into the service or users with free accounts, while they download files from it. Users with premium accounts are not affected at all.

JDownloader, the file hosting downloader, is displaying a warning to users who download files from Rapidshare using the software. It reads:

Rapidshare disabled the ability to resume downloads that were stopped for free users and also limited the average download speed to 30 kb/s.

Because of the way they are doing this, it may look like the download is frozen.

Don’t worry – it’s not. It’s just waiting for the next piece of the file to be transferred.

The pauses in between are added by Rapidshare in order to make the overall average speed slower for free-users.

Rapidshare, besides dropping download speeds, seems to have disabled resume capabilities for free users of the service. Resume allows users to continue downloading a file from the position they stopped the transfer. This can be useful during large file transfers, say a 1 Gigabyte file that stops after 500 Megabytes have been downloaded. Instead of having to download the whole Gigabyte again, users would only have to download the remaining 500 Megabytes.

The third change, next to the drop in average transfer speeds and the removal of the resume option, are pauses that the hoster has added to file downloads. These pauses can make downloads look as if they are frozen or stopped, when in fact they are not.

It is not clear why Rapidshare has made the changes. Some users suspected that the company wants to drive more users into signing up for premium accounts, others that users from Megaupload and other file hosting sites that went out of business have caused to much strain on the Rapidshare servers. The effect however is that the site is barely if at all usable anymore if you are a free user.

Due to appear in the Windows 8 beta that will debut next month, the refresh option makes good on Microsoft’s earlier promise that it would give users an easy way to restore Windows in the event of a problem.

The new OS will actually offer two ways to bring Windows back to factory condition:

• The refresh option will keep all personal data, important settings, and Metro style apps, and then reinstall Windows.

• The reset option will securely remove all data, settings, and applications, and then reinstall Windows.

Refreshing Windows would typically be the first option to try if the OS isn’t behaving properly. And it’s one that Microsoft promises will be completely automated, meaning there’s no need to back up your files or settings beforehand.

To accomplish this, your PC boots up into Windows RE (Recovery Environment), saves your data and settings, installs a fresh copy of Windows 8, restores your data and other content, and then restarts into the fresh new OS. Most key settings are preserved with the exception of file type associations, display settings, and Windows Firewall settings.

Of course, there is one another gotcha. The refresh option will preserve your Metro apps, but not your standard desktop apps. Microsoft nixed the idea of restoring desktop applications for a few reasons.

A single desktop app could be the cause of the initial problem. Certain desktop apps leave no trace of how they were installed, making it difficult to restore them. And unlike Metro apps, Windows has no direct knowledge of the many different installer technologies often used by third-party applications.

As a workaround, Microsoft will offer a manual way to create an image of your existing Windows environment, desktop apps included. But this is something you’d have to run on a regular basis to ensure that all newly installed desktop applications are part of the image.

Finally, the reset option is the one to use if you want to start fresh and don’t need to keep your applications, settings, or other data.

In this scenario, your PC boots into Windows RE, erases and reformats the hard drive, installs a fresh copy of Windows 8, and then restarts. Since all your data is securely wiped, says Microsoft, this is the right option if you plan to pass your PC along to someone else.

What if you don’t own a copy of Microsoft Office or like so many being hit with the bad economy, you just can’t afford to shell out the money to buy a copy, but in some instances having at least Microsoft Word is a necessity.

Create, View, Edit, Share Office documents free with Office Web Apps

If you have a Windows Live ID (Free), using your SkyDrive folder you still have access to the most widely used features of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote, using Office Web Apps. Microsoft Office Web Apps will allow you to view, edit, and share Office documents from anywhere with a browser and an internet connection, for free.

Another plus to this is the ability to open documents saved in Office. So if your employee or friend sends you a document that you really need to open, you can simply open it from within your SkyDrive folder as well as other options such as Edit or Print just the same as if you were using Microsoft Office! This also eliminates the need to locate third-party alternatives if the need arises. You could even use Microsoft Office Web Apps on Microsoft SharePoint 2010.

Want to give it a try, it’s easy!

First you’ll need a Windows Live ID if you don’t already have one. Once you have a Windows Live ID simply visit the following link http://office.microsoft.com/web-apps/

Click the button to Get Started Free. This will open your SkyDrive folder that is included with your Windows Live ID.

Once SkyDrive loads simply click the button for the Office Web App you would like to use and begin creating Office Documents for Free!

Using Office Web Apps, you will be able to access Files From Any Location, with any web browser of your choice including Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, Safari, etc. You will be able to download and save the Office documents to your computer and then view them with your Office software (if you have one) and vice versa. You can co-author and auto-sync files and even restrict access to them.

USB Safeguard is a portable freeware that lets you lock your pen drive and make it write-protected. This will help prevent access to your removable drives should you ever misplace it and keep your data, safe and hidden. The software works by encrypting your data using the AES 256 bits encryption algorithm.

The main purpose of using a USB pen drive is that you can bring your data with you wherever you go. But if you lose your USB pen drive you lose your data.

To lock up your USB Drive, simply enter your password and click on Lock. You will of course be asked to set up a password first.

To unlock the pen drive, enter your password and click on Unlock. This will make your data accessible.

Clicking on ALT+K will open the Windows on-screen keyboard. This option can be used if you suspect that there is a keylogger installed on the computer you’re using or if you are using someone else’s computer.

The free version of USB Safeguard works with USB Drives of up to 2 GB size only. So for pen drives with a higher memory, you will have to pay and use the Pro version.

You may therefore also want to have a look at free utilities like Rohos, TrueCrypt and Cryptainer LE, which will help you password protect your removable media. If you know of any more free software which protects USB Drives of any capacity, please share below in the comments. Ofcourse, if you are using Windows 7, you can always encrypt removable media using its in-built BitLocker To Go feature.

Bytessence DuplicateFinder is a freeware program designed to detect clones of the files stored on your computer. Duplicate files have a negative impact over your system’s performance because they waste valuable space, they increase the antivirus scan time, they make defragmenting take ages and they make it harder for you to organize your files.

DuplicateFinder uses optimized detection algorithms and file filters so the scanning time is greatly minimized. The detected files can be removed in no time with the help of the automatic file selector and the predefined set of actions (copying, moving or deleting).

Pretty fast and efficient. Now I have additional 39 Gigabytes of space available when I cleaned up the unnecessary files in just 3 minutes. Of course, if you don’t want to delete them right away, you can always group them into a folder using “Move” option, and there you can see whether you want to keep some of them.

It works on Windows NT 4.0, 2K, XP, Vista, and Windows 7.

You can download Duplicate Finder here. (scroll down the page for download links)

VSO DivXtoDVD is an easy-to-use freeware tool that allows converting any video file format (not just DivX) to a DVD-Video -compliant. It also supports converting audio files into 2-channel AC3 format, supports NTSC and PAL formats and also 16:9 and 4:3 aspect ratios.

Program’s encoding engine is pretty fast and produces good-quality results (of course it can’t be compared to multipass encoding with CCE, but the easiness and the speed of the software makes it up), considering that the source material is typically already heavily compressed with lossy encoding methods.

Tool also can automatically create chapters for DVDs and also supports putting multiple movies on one DVDR disc. Program has only two major nags — first of all, it doesn’t support converting external subtitles to DVD-compliant subtitles and secondly, it doesn’t allow menu creation which would ease the navigation of the DVD dramatically when there are several movies stored on one DVDR disc. But as a summary, an excellent tool for quick DVD creation and I can see it become quite popular for converting digital camcorder material into DVDR format as well.

How To Use:

interface

The Interface could not be more easy to explain. The first area we can see allows you to set your source file(s) and your Destination folder. Beneath that you have the option to Burn with CopytoDVD if you have it installed on your computer. You also have options for the Aspect Ratio and the Standard (NTSC or PAL). Beside this area is your preview area. After you select a source file or during encoding, a little screen appears here allowing you to take a preview at what the video should look like after encoding. Then you have your convert button and conversion progress bar. Beneath this, you have the Operation Log that logs everything as it happens.

Conversion Process

To convert a file to DVD first you need to tick the little folder icon beside the Source File field. Locate your video file, select it and click Open. Secondly, select your Destination folder by clicking the folder icon beside the Destination folder field. The Aspect Ratio is often ok just left at Automatic, but you can also choose between Force 4:3 and Force 16:9 (the preview will allow you to see if it is being displayed correctly before the encoding finishes). The Standard lets you decide between NTSC and PAL framerates or it can be left at Automatic. The only other option you have now is to select the Burn with CopytoDVD box if you have the software installed on your computer. You can now click Convert and it should begin encoding the DVD for you.

Encoding Multiple Files

You can also put multiple files on the same DVD with DivxToDVD. In order to do this, simply just add more than one Source file. You will notice that the multiple paths will now be displayed in the Source File field. To completely remove all videos from the Source File field, click the red X button. After the conversion is finished, you will get a DVD with multiple VTS, depending on the amount of source files you choose. There will be no menu however, so there may be some playback issues with some DVD players. Also with multiple files it might be the best option to leave Aspect Ratio on Automatic, unless of course you notice that the preview doesn’t look correct.

Finally

So as you can see this program is very easy to use. It’s a pretty fast encoder with acceptable quality and best of all it’s free.

I then use DVDFab or CloneDVD to burn to a DVD.

Microsoft will push the upgrade sometime next month. “10 years ago a browser was born. Its name was Internet Explorer 6. Now that we’re in 2011, in an era of modern Web standards, it’s time to say goodbye,” said Microsoft.
